Discovering Kurama-dera Temple

Upon entering Kurama-dera Mountain Temple I felt honoured and happy to be following in Dr. Mikao Usui’s actual footsteps. The dew from the heavy rainfall the night before charged the cedar-scented air, and I sensed the nature spirits gather around me and the energy like a current of electricity.  I was given a map with these words on it:

Beautiful as the Moon (Love)

Warm as the Sun (Light)

Powerful as the Earth (Power)

We trust in Sonten [cosmic energy] for all things.

Ancient Esoteric History

The mountain has an ancient esoteric history that dates back long before the temple was built in 700 AD. Legend tells of the moon, sun and earth descending to the mountain from Venus to govern the evolution of mankind over 600 million years ago.

Dr. Mikao Usui’s Journey

Dr. Mikao Usui’s journey began in 1921 when he embarked on a transformative quest up Mount Kurama in search of inner peace. For 21 days, he devoted himself to meditation and fasting, seeking spiritual clarity. It was during this intense period of introspection that Dr. Usui experienced a profound spiritual awakening, receiving the energy known as Reiki. This divine energy became a source of healing and empowerment, which Dr. Usui went on to share with his students and eventually, the world. His journey not only led to the discovery of Reiki but also inspired a legacy of healing and spiritual growth that continues to impact countless lives today.

Mythology and Spiritual Significance

Mount Kurama holds a significant place in Japanese history and mythology, believed to be imbued with the spirit of Sonten (Sanat Kumara), regarded as the first teacher of Reiki on Earth. Atop this sacred mountain, Buddhist priests honour Sonten at a revered shrine, continuing the tradition of spiritual reverence and practice that has endured through generations. I was surprised to find no reference to Reiki at all on the mountain, as if its existence were a well-kept secret, accessible only to those who discover it.

Sacred Spaces and Vibrations

The mountain is a labyrinth of sacred spaces and shrines, each resonating with its own distinct energy that harmonises with the elements of water, stones, and trees. These interconnected sites serve as focal points for spiritual practices, where visitors and pilgrims alike can connect with the natural world and tap into the profound energies that permeate Mount Kurama. The combination of serene waters, ancient stones, and majestic trees creates a tapestry of spiritual resonance, fostering a deep sense of peace and renewal for all who traverse its paths.

Spiritual Connection

Standing on Mount Kurama is believed to bridge heaven and earth, offering a profound spiritual connection that transcends the physical realm. As I reflected at the Mao-son shrine, nestled amidst the mountain’s tranquil beauty, I felt a sense of spiritual rejuvenation washing over me. In that sacred space, surrounded by the whispers of ancient trees and the gentle flow of water, I couldn’t help but wonder if I was sitting in the very spot where Dr. Usui once meditated. The air seemed charged with the energy of centuries-old wisdom and spiritual awakening, reaffirming the enduring legacy of Reiki and its transformative power in this sacred place.

Reiki’s Origins and Philosophy

Dr. Usui’s transformative experience on Mount Kurama gave birth to Reiki, a healing energy that heals both body and spirit.

Usui Memorial in Tokyo

Honoring Dr. Mikao Usui

The Saiho-ji temple in Tokyo houses Dr. Usui’s grave and memorial stone, surrounded by tranquility and natural beauty. Intrigued by Dr. Usui’s journey and the transformative power of Reiki, I felt compelled to visit this sacred site to pay my respects and delve deeper into my own spiritual journey. Only the soft buzz of a dragonfly or the distant hum of an airplane interrupted the tranquility. Offerings of chocolate and even beer adorned the coffins, tributes to the departed. Standing before the memorial stone, surrounded by lush greenery and serene temple grounds, I contemplated whether becoming a Reiki master teacher was my true calling.

The peaceful atmosphere and the powerful legacy of Dr. Usui encouraged me to reflect deeply on my own life. This introspection led me to consider my potential to harness and share the healing energies of Reiki with others. It inspired a sense of purpose, pushing me to explore my ability to teach and spread the transformative power of Reiki.

Personal Reflections

Before visiting Japan, I questioned my path as a Reiki Master. However, standing at Dr. Usui’s memorial, surrounded by the serene atmosphere of Saiho-ji temple, I felt a sense of clarity and guidance. It was as if the spirit of Dr. Usui himself was affirming my journey towards fulfilling my destiny as a healer. Inspired by his legacy, I embraced my role in spreading the warmth and spirit of Reiki, one attunement at a time.
